BATTLE CREEK, Mich. ― Automobiles continue to be an essential part of people's daily lives -- there are over 250 million registered in the United States alone. DENSO believes that helping reduce the impact of automobiles on the environment is one of its most important responsibilities. This philosophy has helped DENSO Manufacturing Michigan, Inc. (DMMI) reach an impressive milestone: it has maintained its Michigan Department of Natural Resources and Environment Clean Corporate Citizen (C3) designation for 10 consecutive years.
"We're proud to have a strong environmental management system in place, but the best system only works if you have employees who can sustain it,: said DMMI Environmental Section Leader Mike Myskza. "Our employees do a terrific job of recycling, looking for ways to reduce our waste and energy use, volunteering for environmental causes and ensuring DMMI conforms to laws and regulations. This award really recognizes their efforts and commitment."
This accomplishment was recently commemorated with a special tribute from Governor Jennifer M. Granholm and Lt. Governor John D. Cherry Jr. The tribute recognized DMMI as one of Michigan's top environmental performers.
Participation in the C3 program is voluntary. The criteria for meeting the designation include the development and implementation of an environmental management system, the practice of pollution prevention, and a strong environmental compliance record.
DMMI strives to be an environmental leader by maintaining its ISO 14001 certification in environmental management; setting high targets annually for reducing emissions, water use and waste; participating in community environmental activities and conducting environmental outreach efforts to area schools. DMMI was recognized with a national Environmental Protection Agency award in 2007 for its exemplary environmental performance through the National Environmental Performance Track program.
