“If you build it,they will come.” That might
work for a baseball field built in the middle of an Iowa corn
field in the movie “Field of Dreams, ”but it doesn’t
work in the automotive industry. In today’s competitive
market, a company has to sell its products and its name and
reputation.
DENSO knows this. That’s why we participate in a variety
of industry trade shows and events—to show and tell
who we are, what we make and what makes us unique from other
suppliers.
Trade shows and industry events help us:
• Improve name and product recognition
• Provide additional opportunities for customer contact
• Showcase our products and technology
• Support recruiting efforts
• Provide exposure to regional and global DENSO experts
Through exhibits, technical papers, interviews with industry
journalists and participation in panel discussions and plenary
sessions,we make more people aware of DENSO and our products.
Here are just a few of the industry events DENSO participated
in this year.
SAE
World Congress
The Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) World Congress
draws nearly 40,000 automotive professionals from around the
world each year and features one of the largest, most extensive
technical programs for participants.
DENSO’s 2002 exhibit featured panels and products ranging
from plastic pulleys for automotive air conditioner compressors
to numerical analysis of transient defogging patterns on windshields.
Our news conference on CO2 refrigerant led to stories in
several publications including Automotive Design and Production;
theChicago Tribune; Automotive Engineering International;
Ward’s Auto World, and on WWJAM radio.
Future Car Congress
The Future Car Congress is sponsored by the U.S. Department
of Energy and the U.S. Council for Automotive Research. The
congress tackles the issues involved in developing automotive
technologies to reduce the world’s energy consumption
and minimize vehicle emissions. Attendees from 16 different
countries came to see and learn what the automobiles of the
future will offer.
It was the perfect setting to distinguish DENSO from other
suppliers in our commitment to develop technology that is
kind to the environment while working in cooperation with
government agencies.
Automotive Aftermarket Industry Week 2002
Automotive Aftermarket Industry Week consists of the SEMA
(Specialty Equipment Market Association) and AAPEX (Automotive
Aftermarket Expo) Shows.
AAPEX is the automotive aftermarket event of the year, drawing
buyers from all segments of the service and retail industry.
The SEMA Show is the biggest autoaccessory trade show of
the year. Participants display the automotive performance
products and accessories that will become consumer “must-haves”
in the months to come. Automakers attend SEMA to get ideas
and show their own concepts before they appear in showrooms
or in auto shows.
This year, the event drew a record crowd of more than 82,000
attendees and journalists from every corner of the world.
DENSO’s exhibit, which included DENSO Iridium Power
spark plugs, starters, alternators, windshield wipers, fuel
pumps and oil filters, drew the attention of journalists from
publications such as Aftermarket Business Magazine, Motor
Magazine, Tomorrow’s Technician and Service Tech Magazine.
Through exhibits, technical papers, interviews with industry
journalists and participation in panel discussions and plenary
sessions, we make more people aware of DENSO and our products.
Paris Auto Show
This year marked DENSO’s debut appearance at the Mondial
de l' Automobile (Paris International Auto Show) in Paris,
France. The show is a meeting place for professionals from
across the auto industry as well as a showcase for the general
public.
DENSO’s exhibit featured technology that is important
to the European auto industry. On display were products designed
to help stem global warming such as our CO2 air conditioning
system and our 1,800 bar diesel common rail system. We also
showcased various types of modules such as front-end, cockpit
and integrated air/fuel modules.
Reporters from publications from all over the world including
the Detroit Free Press, Automotive News Europe and Le Journal
de la Recharge stopped by DENSO’s booth for interviews
with DENSO executives.
Global
Powertrain Congress
DENSO took the opportunity, as the only supplier sponsor
of this year’s Global Powertrain Congress (GPC), to
educate customers in our engine management system expertise.
Doug Patton, senior vice president, Customer Support Division/Engineering,
DENSO International America, joined Gerhard Schmidt, vice
president of Research for Ford Motor Company, in presenting
perspectives on the past, present and future of powertrain
control systems during a plenary session at the GPC.
WJR radio covered the event and did a 30-minute story that
included an interview with Patton.
Tokyo
Motor Show
“Sense the Evolution—Commercial Vehicles on Stage”
was the theme for the 2002 Tokyo Motor Show. The show included
exhibits from more than 100 companies. DENSO’s exhibit
focused on diesel and Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS),
emphasizing technologies that represent our commitment to
the environment such as the diesel common rail system. ITS
products included the car navigation system and electronic
toll collection system.
DENSO President Hiromu Okabe spoke at a press briefing on
the first day of the show and was interviewed by journalists
from publications including Automotive News and Bloomberg

participated in a panel discussion on the future of transportation
electronics with special attention to the challenges of inventing
new systems and designs that smoothly integrate electronic
features and functions.
Following the discussion, a reporter from SAE Automotive
Engineering magazine interviewed Omori.In addition,Automotive
News magazine interviewed Shuichi Kosuge, vice president,
Product Group III, DENSO International America, on the future
of telematics in North America.
SAE International Truck & Bus Meeting
& Exposition
Emphasizing light- and medium-duty trucks, the 2002 SAE International
Truck & Bus Meeting & Exposition pulled in a crowd
of engineers, OEMs and journalists to see and hear the latest
technological information on newly introduced or soon-to-be-introduced
trucks from automakers, as well as insights into technologies
being developed for future applications.
Safety was one of the key areas for discussion this year,
with several technical sessions focusing on safety from light-,
medium- and heavy-truck perspectives. Powertrain, telematics,
chassis systems and cooling systems, vehicle dynamics as well
as simulation and validation techniques were among the other
major areas explored in the technical program and on the show
floor.
DENSO Sales California had a booth which featured our line
of brushless alternators, specifically designed to withstand
the rigors of heavy-duty applications. We also displayed the
gear reduction starters we manufacture for engines up to 10
liters.
