Red Cross honors MACI's Kato

Parma, Michigan
Michigan Automotive Compressor, Inc. (MACI)

A philosophy of investing in the community and a strong tradition of volunteerism caught the attention of the Jackson County American Red Cross, resulting in MACI President Kimio Kato receiving the 2003 Everyday Hero: Business and Industry Humanitarian Award on March 27.

The Red Cross emphasized MACI’s Volunteer Team efforts including blood drives, the annual Toys for Tots campaign, and a bone marrow donor registration drive, among others. The Red Cross commended President Kato for the company’s community investment activities including a $10,000 9-11 Disaster Relief Fund contribution to the Red Cross, contributions totalling $35,000 to local public safety departments, and more than $1 million raised for United Way programs since MACI’s inception in 1989. Youth Funds in both the Jackson and Albion Community Foundations, and a MACI Scholarship Fund at Jackson Community College were further noted as examples of a good “Business and Industry Humanitarian.”

MACI is the largest manufacturing employer in Jackson County with approximately 860 associates. The company, a 60/40 joint venture between Toyota Industries Corporation (TICO) and DENSO Corporation, manufactures automotive air-conditioning compressor units for primarily North American automotive manufacturers. Primary customers include DaimlerChrysler, GM, Toyota and Honda.
